At Surrey Urban Mission Society, I worked my way up from cleaning toilets to cooking, to eventually managing other volunteers and staff, helping folks enter recovery programs, and creating programs for women and at-risk youth in the community.
For the last several years I haven’t really known what I was meant to do, and then the pandemic happened and I realized how alone I was. I started Survivor’s Connection to raise awareness about isolation and mental health issues, but also so that I could connect with others and feel less alone.
During the pandemic, I found my stride, but then the pandemic ended and people went back to their lives, meanwhile many of us who struggle with mental health issues, were left alone in the cold, still fighting for folks to hear our voices.
This year is the first year out of six years that I will be hosting a live event for Loud Mouth Brown Girl and the theme is domestic violence and self-defense.
In conjunction with a local kickboxing and self-defense instructor, I will be hosting a self-defense class designed for women living and healing from intense trauma due to domestic violence.
I couldn’t be more excited and more proud to be a part of this amazing event, but I stress I desperately need help.
It was exactly a year ago on April 11th that I ended up houseless and so I am still not working. I am struggling with my finances but I am not giving up the possibility of hosting this event because I know how important it is to the women coming.
Your donations/exchange of funds for gifts will go to providing the following:
- Lunch for 40 women
- Water bottles for women to take with them
- whistles for the women to take with them
- the actual self-defense class
- masks for the women to wear during the class
I really appreciate the support, there are several ways for you to help if you are interested. All money will go towards Survivor’s Connection and anything left over will be donated to those in need.
