When George Floyd was murdered, I received an inundation of messages from white people who had been following me on Twitter for years. They came from all over the world, Germany, France, America, Canada, England, and even South Africa.
I had built a huge platform of white people who were listening to *me* about racism and the racism that made me who I am.
And then Elon took over, and one by one, all those people who said they wanted to dismantle the system vanished into thin air.
So, I’m rebuilding, and in the process, I keep seeing the question pop up: “Why won’t Anonymous show themselves?” What did you think taking off the mask meant, Sarah?
“Why won’t the Black people rush into the streets?” Because they don’t want to get shot.
“Now you know why we can’t just rush into the streets to protect our neighbours, they’ll shoot us in the face,” – said a white woman who, until the moment of Renee Nicole Good’s death, never in this world had any reason to be afraid.
Black people – in particular – have seen this before. They are not immune to the results of white supremacy; they are not hidden from it, if anything, they are active victims of the same white supremacy that is now feeding on America.
The same supremacist ideas that are trying to kill Palestine are doing it to the same country that promises the entire world “Freedom.” What’s freedom about knowing that at any moment your door can be kicked in, and you and everyone you love can be murdered while the President of the most powerful nation in the world calls you a terrorist?
It’s happening. It’s here. The Nazis are in control. There is no denying that. Hitler would be proud as fuck of what he is seeing happen to America today because Hitler’s one day is our day today.
What worries me most isn’t that ICE is kicking down doors of churches, Mosques, and homes. It’s that Black and Brown and Indigenous people have been preparing for this, and eventually, there’s going to be a singular event that implodes the entire country.
There is no more “If we’re careful,” talking to senators and putting your interviews on the internet isn’t enough, so what is? What on earth is going to shake us all to the core that we finally say “Never again,” and fucking mean it.
Because “Never Again,” these days seems to mean, “Until someone bigger and badder says, yes again.”
And again, and again, and again, until we change the way that we navigate this world. Racist humanas have the kind of huberis that I wish I had.
Mainly because you think you’re the most important thing in the room, until someone bigger shows up and then you shake and proddle and pretend that you aren’t pissing in your pants at the fear that yes, you might be next.
I’m hearing stories from my American friends and followers, that tell me ICE is so afraid of their own family members now, some of them are thinking of quitting. Good. Run. Run to the Appalacian mountains and get fucking lost, and don’t come back.
These are your community members you are going after. The people who raise your children. Some of the folks being called “terrorists,” and “Gang members,” are doctors, lawyers, teachers, healers. People who built this country are now being torn between protecting themselves and their neighbors, and no, even the rich aren’t safe.
You can run, and you can hide, but Karma gets every single one of us in the end. Whether it’s in this life or the next life, we all pay the consequences of our choices. Some of us pay while we’re trying to live, others when we’re trying to find rest in the afterlife.
But the Fates mess with all of us, and it’s our job to navigate the world we’re in. It’s our job to do the work of dismanteling the internal racism that we all carry, so that we can move with grace and softness, until necessary.
“Its too much work on my own,” so don’t do it alone. Y’all will create a book group about anything, why not create an all white lady book group that focuses on reading and learning together, when it comes to dismanteling this monster we are facing?
It’s not difficult to do the work when you have community members who not only rely on you doing the work, but support you in your efforts. Unfortunately, too many of us are surrounded by people who are perfectly comfortable with the status quo.
There are white, angry, Canadians who want a form of ICE in this country. I hate to break it to you, we already have an Immigration force, and ICE does operate in Canada, and I know this because I’ve seen them get called on one of my neighbors when he hit his girlfriend.
An all white group of ICE agents showed up to remind him he was here as a legacy, and that he could be removed very easily.
While I don’t agree with his being abusive – obviously – I also don’t agree that you should just be able to call ICE into this country whenever you want.
Immigrants literally built this country into what it is today. And now verifiable descendants of Immigrants are telling anyone they can that “You don’t belong here.” I have more news for you, none of us belong here as long as we’re on stolen land.
I didn’t used to understand what that meant. How can anyone “steal” land from another person, when we don’t own the earth? I always believed, and continue to believe that our time here is borrowed, and that we are supposed to SHARE the earth with each other while we’re here. I don’t believe any one person should dominate over another.
Domination at it’s very core is about white supremacy wrapping itself in anything other than white supremacy, to convince you that it’s actually good and needed for kids in Sudan to die so that we can fucking game.
It’s not. I don’t think enough of us think about the privileges that come with white supremacy, because if we narrow down our privileges as being demeaning or taking away from others, then we actually have to be uncomfortable with the fact that all of us benefit from white supremacy.
You’re reading this on a computer, a laptop, or an iPad, people died so you can read this essay. I think that’s why I’ve become so much more aware of the statistics of people visiting my site.
Today I saw people in fucking Warsaw are visiting my site. Warsaw, Germany, that’s fucking brilliant. Because A) I LOOOOOOVE Germany, German food, and German history, and not because I supported Hitler, but because I know there were a great many Germans who died fighting against Hitler. Many things that we don’t talk about today.
In a hundred years, I don’t want people to say, “Well, America folded because it ate itself.” I want people to say, “Some bad people tried to take over America, and Americans showed the world they weren’t having it.”
It’s so easy to say “Eat the Rich” when we’re pointing at the capitalist world. But we forget that we have the power to decide where we spend our money. We could actually create an entirely new economic ecosystem by supporting websites and apps built by Black, Brown, and Indigenous people. And before you say, “Well, I don’t know where to look,” Miiriya, which is a website and app devoted to promoting Black-owned businesses, is right here.
There are people – white people as well as BIPOC people – who are hiding folks right now. In homes, churches, and warehouses. The fucking Hells Angels of America, the Bikers, the Crips, the Bloods, are defending their communities, and you’re sitting at your technological machine crying, “Why won’t anyone save me?”
If you hear nothing that I say, ever again, hear this: If You Want Change, YOU Might Have To Be The Change You Want.
