If you want to be a writer, start fucking writing something.
Stephen King says that if you don’t read books you can’t be a good writer, and to a certain extent I believe that, but I also believe at a certain point it’s time to stop reading books, and it’s time to start writing them.
Oprah said that everyone on Earth has a story to tell, and to that end she once did an experiment where she and her staff opened a phone book and started picking numbers at random, and calling random strangers, in order to share their stories.
For those that don’t know, a phone book is what they used to have phone numbers in for people around the city.
The point is that every single person on this planet has a story inside of them that is worth telling, the only difference between those of us that share our stories, and those that don’t, is that some of us share our stories.
If you want to be a writer, the very first step is writing. It’s as simple as that. I don’t plan out my blog posts for weeks before I write them, I write from the heart, and I do this because that is what feels comfortable.
I don’t know if I will ever be an award winning writer, but that’s not the point of writing. If you’re writing to win awards, we are not the same. I write because writing makes sense to me, it’s the only time in the world when I know what I am doing.
This is largely because I don’t have my writing edited, so I can’t ever have anyone telling me that I am doing it wrong, but that doesn’t mean that I won’t take that step in the future.
If you want to be a writer, fucking sit your ass down, and write something. It can be anything, long or short, wild, or fantastical, adventurous or romantic.
When I am writing, I am not thinking about what other people are thinking, when I am writing my characters, I am taking all my experience working with people who were houseless and addicted to drugs, because that’s what I know.
It took me years to finally start writing real fiction and putting it out there for people to see, but from the get go, LMBG was always supposed to be written with an element of fiction to it. I didn’t realize that I needed to start a whole other blog to make the story make sense, until I started La Lumiere Magazine.
As soon as I started to write that blog, the story that has been buried in the back of my head since I was a child, started to come together and it started to make sense.
Now that I am writing all these blog posts from the perspective of different characters, I am starting to learn about what makes them tick and who they are. It might not make sense to the audience, but I am hoping that one of these characters will develop into enough of a story that I can write a book about them, but I have absolutely zero idea which one is going to be the main character.
That’s what makes it fun, it’s not about winning awards, it’s not about making money, it’s writing for the sake of writing as I teach myself to be a better writer.
Every writer is going to attack the artform in their own way, but the most important skill that any great writer has, is that they are going to actually sit down and write.
There is an argument to be made for the idea that you absolutely must have a plot formed before you can start writing, but the truth is that the story develops as you write, and sometimes you gotta write a bunch of garbage before you find the heart of the story, but if you chisel away at it long enough, eventually the story will come together.
However you decide to tell your story, make sure that it is in fact, your story. The most important thing about writing, besides actually sitting down to write, is knowing that the story that you are telling is a story that you, as an individual, absolutely must tell, before you die.
So to those about to write, I say good luck. It’s the hardest thing you’ll never try to do, because art is often isolationary, but I promise you that once you find your groove it will absolutely be worth it.
Spell to help you Write – use sparingly.
My pen will not move,
I can not find my groove.
Set my mind free, and let me see, hope and dream,
So that I may tell the story I wish to tell, and help me tell it well.
This is my ask, if you mote it be,
Also, get a cat. All good writers have cats.
Sending all my love,
