In response to this post by Mark Hecht, written and published for and by the Vancouver Sun.

What do you know about Sharia Law?

Here’s what I found, it was the first major response from Google’s algorithm

Sharia law is Islam’s legal system. It is derived from both the Koran, Islam’s central text, and fatwas – the rulings of Islamic scholars. Sharia literally means “the clear, well-trodden path to water”.May 7, 2014

That’s all I know, but that’s because I took the time to look it up. The average Vancouver Province user or reader is not going to go and look that information up, after reading this post, they are instead going to see the stats quoted within this post and become even more afraid of men and women who are of Indian descent, in the assumption, that they might believe in this law.

That right there is the power of racism, and the problem that I have with the Vancouver Sun promoting that racism, is that it’s putting my life, and the lives of people who look like me in danger.

Canada has always had a race problem, that’s not new, but what is new is the open hostility those of color are facing every day more and more because that Vancouver Sun sees nothing wrong with promoting hatred through it’s highly extended network of readers.

There seems to be a kind of testing of the waters, so to speak, in response to these kinds of posts coming through Canadian Media as of late. As long as our white Canadians refuse to say anything, refuse to get angry or stand up to this kind of and I use the term loosely, “journalism”, it stays put. The moment anyone feels the need to argue it comes down, and those who work at these institutions are forced to apologize while no one in the higher ranks feels the need to do the same.

“It’s an opinion, it’s not our fault,” oh but it is my loves, because it is your paper, it’s the place you work, it’s the place that feeds your love of the written word, it is not just a gift you have been given but a responsibility.

It’s a bit like calling fire out in an full movie theater, it’s irresponsible to continue fanning the flames of racism with one hand while simultaneously crying it’s not your fault on the other.

We are at the beginning stages of an all out war between the races, and those who have the power to say something must start standing up and saying enough is enough before it’s too late, but my voice doesn’t matter, remember that clearly. Because the Vancouver Sun will never respond to this post, it would be shameful to do so, they would have to admit they fucked up.

I am not saying that you shouldn’t allow people to write op-eds, but you have to decide, as Editors in Chief, what the tone of your paper, your industry is going to take, and frankly allowing racism to permeate the pages of your great community is not going to win you any awards, it is however going to start that war I was talking about earlier.

It is unnerving to me that your Employee’s specifically feel the need to apologize while your Editors do not. It is unnerving to me, that you will allow white men to use the idea of Sharia law to terrify your readers, without explaining exactly what that means.

You have officially used the once great Vancouver Sun to be used to terrify people, as a weapon of terror. There’s no turning back now I suppose. Luckily there are Loud Mouth Brown Girl’s everywhere who are willing to stand up and tell you how wrong you are.

The question now is…do you fucking care?

Sending all my love,

Devon J Hall
